Nineteen-year-old Ben Hurst of Oakville, Ontario has announced a new initiative with Cliff Dempsey Racing in England. Hurst has signed on to complete two test days with the English Formula Ford squad alongside his Canadian racing commitments while he is in England studying Sports Management.
“It was really all thanks to the recommendation from Brian Graham that I managed to set this up with Cliff Dempsey. I’m doing my schooling at the University of Manchester, and part of the idea with going to school over there was to take advantage of racing opportunities in England, because it’s the home of motorsport with some of the most competitive Formula Ford fields in the world, and I want to go up against the best.”
Hurst got the chance to see some of this top class Formula Ford racing last fall when he spent some time with Cliff Dempsey Racing while fellow Canadian, Parker Thompson, competed in the Formula Ford festival.
“Ever since I started following racing, I knew that Britain was the home to Formula One and motorsport and to be able to race and test on tracks that have been home to some iconic races is a dream come true.”
Hurst will be testing at Brands Hatch on March 10th and Silverstone on March 24th.
“I want to see how the testing with Cliff Dempsey goes first before making other plans but ultimately I would like to do at least a race or two while I’m studying in England.”
In addition to learning new tracks, Hurst will also be driving a completely different car from the Piper he drives in Canada.
“It always helps to go to new tracks to learn them and hopefully I’ll be able to learn a few things about race craft while I’m testing with Cliff Dempsey. As for the car, it’s always a learning experience to drive another car but I always find it fun to see how different cars behave.”
