Winning Weekend at Shannonville Cements Ontario Championship Lead for Hurst

Twenty-year-old Ben Hurst of Oakville, Ontario has cemented his lead in the Toyo Tires Formula 1600 Series Ontario Championship following a winning weekend at Shannonville Motorsport Park.

“Overall, it was a fantastic weekend, really happy to have my first win in the Toyo Tires Championship and had a lot of fun at Shannonville especially because of the added challenge of having two different track layouts to race on over the course of the weekend.”

During the Saturday qualifying session Hurst went out and took pole for the first race later in the day. That would be his first ever pole position. “It felt great to get my first pole,” he added.

“The race was an awesome battle despite difficult conditions, while it had stopped raining in time for the green flag the track was still very wet to drive. A spin early on in the race pushed me down into P3, but I recovered really well and had a great battle with two B-Class cars at the front and took the lead towards the end of the race,”

Having set the fastest lap time of the first race Hurst started the weekend’s second race, which took place Sunday morning, on pole as well.

“I had a great start, a little misjudgement on braking on my part caused me to run wide through the grass on the first lap but I managed to recover quickly and actually had a lot of fun making my way back through the pack to finish second overall and first in class.”

Making it a weekend sweep, Hurst started the third and final race on pole as well and subsequently led every lap of the race.

“I got a fantastic start and kept the lead after the first few corners. From there I kept my head down and continued to build up my lead throughout the rest of the race. It felt great to end the weekend with a dominant race like that.”

Hurst wishes to thank his team, Brian Graham Racing, his mechanic, Kyle, and his engineer, Cyril, for a great weekend. He also wishes to thank Form and Function Fitness Centre for helping him to train and prepare for the weekend.

Hurst returns to the track the weekend of July 29th and 30th at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park for the fourth round of the Toyo Tires F1600 Series Ontario Championship.

Hurst is the Toyo Tires Formula 1600 Championship Rookie of the Year from 2015, BARC’s Best New Driver of 2015, a Team Canada Scholarship 2016 nominee and a member of Pinty’s National Hot List of Drivers to watch in 2017. Hurst is proud to represent Form and Function Fitness Centre and Braidan Tire.
