Formula 1600 driver Ben Hurst of Oakville, Ontario returned to the track this past weekend for the BEMC Indian Summer Races held at his home track of Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
Hurst qualified for race one on Saturday in P3 and crossed the line in P3 overall and P2 in class after a hard-fought battled with A-Class competitor Shane Jantzi and B-Class competitor Craig Willis.
“It was a really competitive battle. I started P3 overall and it was incredibly tough battling with Shane and Craig but amazing racing, really fun. We were close to the win but couldn’t quite get it.”
Race two on Sunday morning saw Hurst start on the front row in P2 overall and cross the line first.
“I knew we had the best chance possible starting on the front row. After quite an eventful race with Craig and Shane we managed to come out on top with my first win at my home track. The feeling was incredible, and I couldn’t have asked for anything better…until of course race three came along.”
Sunday afternoon brought the third race of the weekend and a second overall finish.
“A truly incredible battle between three amazing racers. We came out second overall and first in class. The best race I’ve had in an F1600 car, I learned a lot in this race alone and it was a great way to finish the season.”
Hurst headed into the weekend with a commanding championship lead of 133 points. After a weekend of podium finishes that lead opened up further and Hurst is proud to announce his win of the Ontario Toyo Tires Formula 1600 Series Championship.
“Three years of work went into this one trophy. I want to thank Brian for encouraging me to challenge for the championship this year and my parents for helping to make it possible.”
Hurst wishes to thank his team, Brian Graham Racing, his mechanic, Paul, and his engineer, Cyril, for a great weekend and season. He also wants to thank Form and Function Fitness Centre for helping him to train and prepare for the weekend.
Hurst is the Toyo Tires Formula 1600 Championship Rookie of the Year from 2015, BARC’s Best New Driver of 2015, a Team Canada Scholarship 2016 nominee and a member of Pinty’s National Hot List of Drivers to watch in 2017. Hurst is proud to represent Form and Function Fitness Centre, Antara Marketing and Braidan Tire.
